RUDIAK MOUNTAIN OLIGOTROPHIC SWAMP
There is a unique moss marsh in the national park. Its area is about 7 ha and 2.6 m deep.
It is known that marshes are created in places where lakes are deprived of running water. There was probably a large and pure lake in that area about 2,000 years ago. After many centuries the lake shoaled (became shallow) and covered with water plants and mosses until it turned into a marsh and became overgrown with trees. From a scientific point of view, Rudiak is categorized as a high marsh, which feed on precipitation.
A natural feature of the marsh is reflected in the ability of 1 ha of the marsh to absorb 50-1800 kg of carbonic acid gas from the air. A marsh has a rich ecosystem. About 200 plant and animal species can be found in one square meter. The round-leaved sundew is the only raptorial plant that grows in Ukraine. The plant feeds on small flies and mosquitos.
